About the Class
The spine is the central support structure of our body that connects all the parts of the skeleton, and enables the efficient functioning of the nervous system. The vertebrae protect the spinal cord and nerve roots, through which messages to and from the brain are relayed to the various part of the body.
Poor posture, lack of body awareness and muscle imbalances can pull the spine out of its optimal position, and over time may lead to poor function, inflexibility and loss of stability, possibly creating chronic pain.
‘Somatics’ refers to a practice of movement education that enhances internal awareness of the body, whilst improving mobility and coordination in our movements.
Through the practice of somatic movement we begin to get in touch with what we are sensing, and learn to respond to that. By bringing awareness to how we move, we begin to recognise the tension patterns within that cause muscular imbalance, and can gradually learn how to free ourselves from these habitual patterns.
With improved sensory awareness, we are able to improve our mobility, leading to freer movement in everyday life. This freedom in the body allows the spine to become more mobile and adaptable.
This workshop will look at how to maintain optimal function of the spine through simple and gentle Somatic movements. Somatics can help one to understand the cause of back pain, and through simple techniques, begin to relieve and even completely eradicate any pain.
Suitable for complete beginners.
